Last weekend we spent an entire afternoon weeding the garden. We recently went away and lets just say the garden got a little out of control! One of the down falls of organic gardening is the amount of weeds that accumulate. While we were away we also had a sprinkler watering the garden and this caused the weeds to go crazy. Obviously it would be much easier to use weed killers to keep our garden in better shape however, we are committed to an organic garden.
Organic gardening has its pros and its cons. The major pro is that we are not ingesting chemicals that are harmful to our health and our environment. It makes us so happy to provide our family with food that we know is clean! That being said there are times we do not eat organic like when we are out and some food we buy from the store. We try to buy organic when we can but in a reality we can’t always be 100% organic. That why we value our garden so much.
Some of the cons of organic gardening…. well weeds and pests. We do not use any chemicals to get ride of pests and animals in our garden. This means that this year we lost all of our peaches, raspberries, blueberries and peas. Our apple tree currently has a disease called Cedar Apple Rust causing our tree to have what looks like little rust spots on the leaves. We have a gopher, lots of chipmunks and squires enjoying a daily buffet
In our opinion, the pros completely outweigh the cons and we are very happy to be organic gardeners!
